Hiking on a Budget: A Beginner’s Guide to Affordable Adventure
Looking to start hiking on a budget? This short guide offers valuable tips to get out on an adventure without breaking the bank!
How can beginners start hiking on a budget?
The world of hiking and outdoor adventure can be overwhelming when it comes to cost and gear needs. There’s always an influencer out there trying to get you to buy the latest (and often expensive) gadget, but you don’t have to in order to start hiking.
I once saw a guy hiking up a mountain wearing denim shorts with a McDonald’s cup in his hand! Now there are plenty of outdoorsy folks I know who would have rolled their eyes and made fun of him, but what did I think? Good for him for getting outside to experience all the beauty nature has to offer!
"And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus" - Philippians 4:19 -
Now I don’t throw this verse in here to encourage you to be un-wise in your planning and gearing up for a hike, but I do want to encourage you that it can be more simple than many make it look.
Without further ado, let’s see how to make this whole hiking on a budget concept work!
Use what you already have
As covered in my Hiking for Beginners post, gear is important but you likely have all you need to get out there on your first adventure. You might be surprised at how many items you already have that can be used for hiking. If you have a solid pair of shoes and a comfortable pack, you are most of the way there. Wear your favorite workout wear that’s appropriate for the weather, throw in a trusty water bottle with some snacks and you’re most of the way there!
Borrow or rent gear
If your aspirations reach further than your own closet’s abilities, ask a friend if they have extras you can borrow. There’s no shame in wanting to try something out before making an investment. Don’t have any outdoorsy friends? Local shops and bigger retail locations like REI often have rental services.
Especially if you’re a beginner hiker, you may want to look into local group or guided hikes. Of course there is a likely cost associated with participating, but it might be worth it if the trip includes access to equipment.
Thrift it up
This is still my favorite way of acquiring gear. It’s probably due to the decades-worth of retail work that makes me cringe every time I see an MSRP. But really, it’s like a treasure hunt and can feel SO rewarding!
I personally don’t bank on stumbling upon a bargain in a thrift store. If I find something, cool. But where I’ve really found luck is online. This is because I’m usually searching for a very specific brand or item and can search for exactly what I need.
Besides local classifieds like Facebook Marketplace and large online outlets like Ebay, here’s a list to some of my favorite spots to search for gear:
Mercari
Poshmark (use the code DNICHS for $10 off your first order!)
GearTrade
Utilize public lands
Many public lands offer low-cost or free access to some of the most beautiful natural settings. Make most of our lands by keeping an eye out for designated free entrance days or special offers for certain age groups or demographics.
There are usually many free trails that can be found locally. Even interurban trails can offer a refreshing dose of nature. Plus, if your trailhead isn’t far, you save money on gas or by taking public transportation!
Hiking on a budget is more than possible!
Embarking on any adventure on a budget is not only achievable, but incredibly satisfying. By using what you already have, borrowing or renting gear, thrifting for outdoor essentials, and making the most of public lands, you can explore the beauty of nature without breaking the bank.
Remember the joy of hiking lies in the experiences and memories made along the way, not in the price tag of your gear. Getting outside benefits us in so many ways, so don’t let a perceived need for gear keep you from enjoying God’s creation!
